What is a digital certificate and how does it work?
The digital certificate of an individual or a company lets you, first, identify yourself to public bodies (Hacienda, Seguridad Social, the town hall…) and, second, sign digital documents without printing or scanning them.
How it works, step by step
Obtaining it
There are different ways to obtain the certificate, so some formats may carry limitations, but identification is always the primary function.
Installation
Once you have obtained the certificate and chosen a password, you receive a file you can install on any device: computer, phone or tablet.
Identification
When you enter, for example, the Sede Electrónica of the Agencia Tributaria, you press the AREA PERSONAL button. The system redirects you to access via DIGITAL CERTIFICATE, and you select the certificate installed on your device.
Access to your data
Once identification is complete you can view the personal data the authorities hold about you. The same route works for identifying yourself to any state body.
